Summer 2014 Base Install

Summer 2014 Base Install - July 14 2014

My Learning Experience Installing Summer

Installed no problem at all. Added myself as a user and started to set up my home directory as I do and cp'g stuff over, symlinking, and shit like that. Updated my fstab to auto mount my /data partition and installed my typical bloat.

I had to update, then install the firmware-brcm80211. Kept things simple and just copied over my /etc/network/interfaces from Gruffalo and sudo ifup wlan0 was all I needed. No worries there.

I ran into a bit of a problem with the upgrade. Ran into a block with initramfs-tools. But this was slightly different than some of you all had.

First tried

sudo apt-get install --reinstall initramfs-tools

But got still

cannot stat /lib/live/boot no such file or directory E: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/live failed with return 1

So I created /lib/live/, then /lib/live/boot myself and

sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb

and we're good and ready to rock

Now that I was all updated, I started on some other stuff, like the touchpad. Normally it works OOTB, but this time I had to put some work into it.

Created a 51-synaptics.conf with this code

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "touchpad catchall"
Driver "synaptics"
MatchIsTouchpad "on"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Option "TapButton1" "1"
Option "VertEdgeScroll" "on"
EndSection

That didn't work, so I replaced the 50-synaptics.conf with the same. However, while doing so realized I had a small typo with the 'I' in 'MatchIsTouchpad' not capitalized. But I forged on with replacing the 50 file. And alas, that worked.

UPDATE: so it turns out all I need was

get udev-config-siduction

Well shit, that could have saved me a few hours. But that's no problem. It was a fruitful learning experience. Now the next time will be that much easier

So all in all, after adding my typical bloat additions, I'm happy and will use this as my main spin

get firmware-brcm80211 xfonts-terminus vim chkconfig dbus dbus-x11 dunst compton libgtk2.0-0 xcursor-themes murrine-themes iceweasel leafpad weechat i3lock cmus cmus-plugin-ffmpeg feh flashplugin-nonfree

And here are the scrots of the end result

So before you get carried away with how much bloat I installed, lets break it down.

dunst for notifications
dbus and dbus-x11 are required for dunst and some other shit
iceweasel as my fancy browser
weechat for irc
cmus for music
leafpad for, well, you, know, sometimes you just need a simple gui text editor
chkconfig to turn off just about all autostart services
feh for pictures
compton for shadows
murrine-themes so the browser theme looks smooth
xcursor-themes so I can have my belove 'handhelds' cursor theme

Thank you Machinebacon for another solid base. Next will be the Fall base, but for now, lets just sit back and enjoy summer
